Choosing a senior photographer is actually a very important step in beginning your senior portrait experience. There are so many different photographers out there with different styles, personalities, and processes. But how do you choose?!
Here are 10 tips on how to choose the right photographer for your senior experience.
1. Editing Style
You will want to look at different photographer’s websites and social media pages to see what their portfolios look like. All photographers edit differently, some are light and airy, some dark and moody, some are bright and bold, and others are true to color. Do you want someone who does a lot of heavy editing, or someone who is more natural? Photographers don’t normally change their editing style from session to session, so you are going to want to make sure you like what you see. When you see pictures that you love and wish to have for your senior portraits, then go ahead and reach out!
2. Personality
You want to do your research and choose someone that you are going to match well with, either someone with a similar personality to you or someone who has a personality you like. Your photographer’s personality is going to play a huge role in how comfortable you will feel during your shoot, so if you feel uncomfortable, that will show in your pictures. A great way to get to know a photographer’s personality is through following them on social media. Seeing their live videos, reels and stories will give you a great understanding on who they are and how the act. Another thing to consider is how they communicate with you once you reach out to them. Do they only communicate through email? Or do they reach out by phone to have a more personalized conversation. Sometimes the way they connect with you can be a make or break when it comes to having a good connection.
4. Response Time
This one is short and sweet, but if you reach out and they don’t respond in a timely manner, they just might not be the right fit for you!
4. Photography Style
Photography style consists of either posed photos, candid photos, or a mix of both. If you know what style you are looking for, you more than likely can tell from the photographer’s portfolio what their style is. If you can’t tell, don’t be afraid to reach out and ask! If you don’t know what style you want, that’s okay too. If you like the photos you see on the photographer’s portfolio, you will more than likely like the style they have. As for my photography style, I like to do both a mix of candid and posed so that my seniors get the best of both worlds with a large variety of beautiful photos to choose from.
5. Reviews
Reading reviews on a photographer can tell you a lot about what your experience with them will be like. You can check mine out here! You can learn a lot about a photographer based on what others are saying, and if you like what you see, then your one step closer to knowing if this is the right person for you or not!
6. Packages & Add Ons
Check out what they have to offer. Some have a single package, while others have options to choose from. Do their packages have the products that will meet your needs and wants when it comes to your senior photos? Are they in your budget? Some offer additional services, such as hair and makeup, if there is something specific you are looking for for your session, make sure you find someone that offers those things.
